Ever felt like a bad mother?

Ever felt like a terrible mother? That was me two weeks ago as I put Miss H on the school bus which was taking her to the airport and a 10 hour flight to Sri Lanka for a hockey tour. I know what you’re thinking, how lucky is she? And yes she is, so why did I feel so bad?

She had everything she needed for the trip, new bikini’s, tour kit, hockey stick, my favourite mineral suncream and tonsillitis! Yes the tonsillitis had come on with 2 days to departure and she was travelling with the biggest bag of medication you’ve ever seen! We were hitting it hard with both antibiotics and herbal remedies but I’d never seen her throat look so red with white puss and inflammation everywhere.

While I knew she would be on the mend in 2 or 3 day’s time, and she wouldn’t thank me for keeping her home, saying goodbye was a wrench.

It’s times like this that I’m really glad I know so much about gut health and the link between the gut and the immune system. Those antibiotics were definitely going to kill the tonsillitis but they were going to kill so many healthy, good bacteria along the way too. Which is why  I also sent her with an arsenal to boost her immune system. For me a good probiotic is a must every day. She took my favourite Digestion Plus with her and while she would normally have it in her breakfast shake she agreed to being ‘hard core’ like her mother and sticking it under her tongue every morning. Here’s how I take mine! Keeping your gut in great shape and eliminating food every day is the window to god health. I believe that taking a pro-biotic (otherwise known as good bacteria or beneficial micro-organisms which we all have living in our digestive tract) is key. Probiotics help move food through your gut and while researchers are still trying to figure out which are best for certain health condition some common conditions they treat are: Irritable bowel syndrome; Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); Infectious diahorrea (caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites; Antibiotic-related diahorrea so you can see why I thought it was essential Miss H was taking them every day.

On day 3, when she was feeling so much better and perhaps thought about giving up on the probiotics, the girl who she was rooming with went down with an upset tummy. It made Miss H even more convinced that taking her pro-biotic every morning was a must. It turns out she was pretty much the only pupil who didn’t get sick while she was away. Not only did she eat most of the dishes offered to her and loved the curries and spicy food, but enjoyed a massive selection of vegetables which it turns out many of girls wouldn’t touch. And to cap it all she won the Spirit of the Tour Award for her uplifting spirit and motivation. That’s my girl!

She returned home completely recovered with skin glowing and feeling so much better The healthy living lifestyle I teach is clearly making an impression on my teenage daughter. I‘ll have competition in the health coaching department soon I can see!
